homemaking 101: feel free to share

We all have little tricks and tips for keeping organized. I'm always looking for new ones as this cozy four-bedroom feels as if it could bust at the seems any time. This past week or so, I've slowly been going through closets again, packing away winter, and getting ready for spring/summer. My neighbor is having a garage sale next weekend, so it's been motivating for me to get the sorting finished in time to add a few things to her sale. Part of our seasonal changeover also takes place in the hall closet where winter coats are washed and put away, replaced now with spring jackets and hoodies. A couple years ago I purchased an over-the-door shoe organizer with clear pockets. I keep it inside the front coat closet. In the winter it holds mittens, hats, scarves etc. In the warmer months, when snow-gear is packed away, it's home to flip-flops, lots of them. All the girls seem to have a pair in nearly every color, and I was tired of them laying throughout the house. So, now they hang neatly, in pairs and easy to spot, in the front closet...easy to grab on the way out, and even easier to put away. No more searching last minute as we're ready to take off. Do you have any great "can't live without" organizing tips? Please share!

I'm sorry I don't have anything to share, but I want to thank you for sharing yours! I've been struggling with a way to keep hats, gloves, scarves, etc. where they can be reached (and returned!) by little ones, and our current systems feels as though it only adds to the clutter. Hope you don't mind if I steal your suggestion and thanks for sharing!

Love the shoe organizer, we have three in our house!! Each of the girls has their own for all of their shoes...no more clutter on the floor. Now if we could just keep the rest of their rooms that clean!!

I totally agree about growing out of our house--the bigger the kids get the more space they take up! I try many, many tricks to help me feel as though our house is bigger than it really is. I find that getting dressers out of the bedrooms frees up a lot of space--storing clothes under beds in containers helps. Thankfully we have nice size closets in two of the bedrooms (one is being occupied by little Jamie).

I'm surely going to grab your idea about the shoes organizer--great idea!

I am the queen of organization! I have the same shoe organizer in our small garage closet. All baseball cleats, garden clogs, mowing shoes, etc., go out there along with batting gloves, and other small sports things, so nothing dirty has to come in our house. I have cubbies in the laundry room by the back door so no backpacks ever go into the rest of the house. I have another shoes organizer on the back of the boys bedroom door for all their jerseys and underarmour type shirts because they don't fold well anyway. Natalie has bins in her closet for swimsuits and coverups and we have a backdoor coat closet with 3 shelves with bins...winter for hats and gloves, summer for sunscreen and goggles and small pool toys. I could go on an on! Oh, They each have a medium under the bed box for any sports/school articles, papers, art projects they want to keep throughout the year, and then in June, we go through what they want to keep or use for scrapbooks (the girls!) and put in their respective Memorablilia boxes in the attic...each with their nam,e on them! To really take this further, we have an extra closet on the first floor that I have 6 cube organizers sitting on the floor for all our purses. With 4 girls. we just share, so we can open the big closet door and check out the bins all organized according to color of purses!! Have you heard enough? sorry!

You go girls. I try to organize but can't keep up with the rest of my crazy, unorganized selves. Baskets are only good if someone actually puts stuff in them!!!!

I have also used the shoe organizer on the back of a bathroom door to hold ponytails, brushes, spray bottles, etc. when we had little storage space in our old house. A very good, wise friend of mine gave me great advice when we were building our home...You can never have enough closet space! Fortunately, she also worked for the builder we used and hooked me up! I think of her every time I put something away in my extra closets that she made sure to add just for me! (Thanks, Amy!) They also made sure to put in great closet organizers with shelves all over the place and clothes rods at different heights. Our kids don't even use dressers because they made our closets so efficent. Just baskets for socks & underware on a couple of the shelves. Gives them more floor space in their room to not have a dresser taking up space. If you have a handy husband, you can do it pretty inexpensively. We're currently doing the same type of organizers in the bonus room bedroom we're finally getting to fix up. Also, I can never get enough of plastic containers of all shapes and sizes. Should have bought stock in them a LOOOOONG time ago!
